Abstract

Since the use of Li-ion(lithium-ion) battery is so widespread in Korea, it is happen to various fire accidents. The fire characteristics and mechanisms of Li-ion battery are still a major study in battery system. This paper presents fire characteristics and hazards of cylindrical Li-ion battery using fire experiment. The fire experiment is conducted to attain the stage thermal runway of Li-ion battery placed on the hot plate hold on constant temperature. The hot plate temperature is 300 ℃. Also the fire experiment is conducted to analyze SOC(state of charge) and performance of inert gas agent under open space and low oxygen atmosphere injected to inert gas. The results show that cylindrical Li-ion battery occurs thermal runway approximately 150 ℃ and under low oxygen atmosphere. The thermal runway is not occur in low SOC.
