Abstract

This paper presents one lesson of Greek Sign Language (GSL) according to the principles of bilingual education for the deaf. These principles were established by the Hellenic Ministry of Education and the Pedagogic Institute in the first publication of the curricula for deaf students. For the purposes of this paper, the Modern Greek curriculum of secondary education has been chosen since the objectives and the teaching material needed for the learning of GSL have not yet been developed. It is suggested that the teaching of GSL within the present curriculum of Modern Greek will enable deaf students to understand the differences and similarities of both languages, from a linguistic and cultural perspective.
