Abstract

The goal of this paper is to show the role that Dramatic Art plays as an educational tool for the social-emotional development of students in elementary school. Is this role important and what is it exactly? The paper consists of six chapters. The first chapter is the introduction where we have a brief presence of the dissertation with its purpose and sub-objectives. In the second chapter the educational system is mentioned and the Progressive Education movement, from which emerged Drama in Education as an important pedagogical tool. This is followed by a historical review of Drama in Education, theatrical education in the curriculum and clarification of the terms Drama and Theatre. A definition of Drama in Education comes afterwards, with its characteristics, pedagogical benefits and structural elements. The third chapter deals with the social and emotional development of the child. 1st subchapter: the socialization of the child, socialization actors and social skills and 2nd subchapter: the emotional development of the child, the emotional intelligence-empathy, the role of the family, the emotional education and the role of the school. The fourth chapter presents Educational Drama in practice, how it works in other words, in primary school. A detailed presentation is followed, with its goals, characteristics, design and techniques. In the fifth chapter, the research literature based on the subject of this paper is presented. Research abroad and in Greece that proves the contribution of Drama in Education in the social and emotional development of children in primary education. Finally, the sixth chapter is the summary and conclusions.
