동물원 방문객의 인식 및 만족도 영향요인 연구

Abstract

동물원은 바쁜 일상을 벗어나 자연 속에서 가족이나 친구와 시간을 즐기는 하나의 여가공간이자 현대 사회에서 인간과 동물이 접촉할 수 있는 가장 중요한 장소이다. 오랜 기간 인간의 위락을 위한 시설로서 인식되어져 온 동물원은 환경오염과 생태계 파괴로 인한 멸종동물이 증가하는 오늘날 종보존과 연구, 생태계 및 환경교육의 장소로서의 역할이 커지고 있다. 이러한 동물원의 변화하는 역할과 사회적 중요성에도 불구하고 동물원 및 그 방문객에 대한 국내연구는 매우 부족한 상황이다. 본 연구는 동물원의 발전방향을 모색하기 위한 기초연구로서, 동물원 방문객들의 이용행태와 동물원에 대한 인식을 파악하고, 동물원 방문의 만족도에 영향을 미치는 요인을 분석하는 것을 목적으로 전국 6개 공립동물원 방문객 730명을 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하였다. 그 결과, 동물원은 오늘날 가족들의 여가공간이자 교육장소로서 중요한 역할을 수행하고 있으며, 놀이나 위락공간으로만 간주되었던 동물원이 보존과 교육 장소로서 그 역할에 대한 인식이 변화하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 또한 동물원 방문객의 만족도 결정요인에 있어 관람환경요인과 동물복지요인, 전문적인 설명과 안내요인이 방문객의 만족도와 재방문 의사에 중요한 영향을 주는 것으로 나타난 반면, 편의시설은 영향력이 상대적으로 낮은 것으로 조사되었다. 방문객들은 동물복지와 자연서식처와 유사한 환경제공의 중요성을 높게 인식하고 있었으며, 이는 방문객의 만족도와도 관련이 높은 중요한 요인으로 나타났다. 오늘날 동물원이 사회적으로 요구되는 종보전과 환경교육이라는 역할을 수행하기 위해서는 테마공원과의 경쟁을 위한 지나친 상업화 보다는 동물원의 본질과 특성을 살릴 수 있는 동물환경과 복지 개선 및 다양한 교육프로그램 개발이 필요하며, 이를 위한 여러 분야의 다학제적인 협력이 요구된다. Zoological parks are considered to be a recreational place for family outings and most importantly the starting place of contact with animals in the modem society. Due to environmental threats and the loss of wildlife habitats, the zoos have significant roles to play in education, research and conservation in addition to the traditional role-entertainment, but research on zoos and their visitors is very limited in Korea. The present study surveyed that the zoo visitors' perceptions of the role of zoos, satisfaction, and behaviors in 6 public zoos, during which 730 zoo visitors were interviewed. The results indicated that the zoos represent an opportunity for family-based trips, enjoyment with family or friends and education that are the primary motives for visiting the zoos. The findings demonstrate that respondents considered the four main roles of zoos namely conservation, education, entertainment, and research to be important and recognize its value for conservation and environmental education. The determinants of satisfaction of zoo visitors were ease of visibility, welfare of captive animals, and the availability of information. Most respondents believed that naturalistic exhibits and animal welfare were very important. In order to reinforce the roles of the zoo in modem society, multidisciplinary efforts are needed to improve the animal welfare, replicate native habitats, and develop various education programs.
