Abstract

At the stage of state formation, the end of the XX – beginning of XXI centuries, Ukrainian science and culture actively entered a world globalization process. To determine the direction of development, each kind of science must periodically summarize what has been achieved and objectively evaluate its achievements. The level of education, science, and culture of any state is largely reflected in the state of the encyclopedic discipline. In the context of globalization of social development, the role of reference books, such as encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference books, extremely increased. Altogether, they objectively, impartially, and fundamentally reflect the level of science and culture of the nation. Given that encyclopedic publications are an effective tool of the cultural and educational policy of the state, clarification of their typology, stylistic features, and functions is currently relevant in the field of encyclopedias. This is what the implementation of this study is aimed at. The research methodology is based on general scientific methods of analysis and synthesis. Typological methods structure reference books on a certain basis; classification methods identify the thematically homogeneous flow of publications; statistical methods detect the frequency of occurrence in the flow of documents with a certain feature. The factual approach will help to raise the level of Ukrainian reference publications, evaluate each of them and help to make judgments about scientific and cultural phenomena on their basis in general. The purpose of the study is to present the typological foundation of reference publications and their systematization as the basis of modern knowledge in various fields of science. Moreover, the aim of this paper is to improve the quality of education and, in particular, the teaching of document and communication disciplines. The paper considers Ukrainian reference publications in the system of social communications and their documentary microflow structure. Emphases are made on rationing and standardization of the main terms of reference publications, in particular, the terminology of document science and library science is presented. Ukrainian electronic encyclopedias are presented as an information resource. By characterizing the layer of Ukrainian scientific heritage, there was analyzed regional encyclopedias, encyclopedic publications in the humanities, and personal encyclopedias with an assessment of each publication. Speaking about the perspectives of encyclopedic information creation, we can identify the following areas of encyclopedic research: the formation of a national resource of encyclopedic information at the academic level, which would be the basis of a scientific, referential, and biobibliographic thorough support of fundamental and applied encyclopedic publications; the generalization of experience of local and world encyclopedias and the development of methodical bases, organizational approaches, rules of encyclopedias formation. The creation of electronic encyclopedias will provide, maintain and improve the information foundation necessary for the educational and research work of scientists and specialists, and appropriate mechanisms for international information exchange in order to integrate scientists into the global academic community. Hence, to provide society with access to quality encyclopedias, dictionaries, reference books means to increase the level of education of citizens and to improve their intellectual capabilities. Such publications have great potential and are an instrument of educating sincere patriots of Ukraine. Therefore, the development of reference books should be the main direction of state policy in our country.
