Abstract

In modern ophthalmic surgery, several types of silicone oils are used, which differ primarily in viscosity and molecular weight. Surgical treatment of severe proliferative vitreoretinopathy, severe forms of retinal detachment leads to the fact that the period of silicone oil in the vitreal cavity is delayed, and sometimes becomes lifelong. The main change that happens to silicone inside the eye is its emulsification, which creates one of the most serious problems in vitreoretinal surgery. Domestic and foreign literature sources were analyzed in this work and the main factors affecting the emulsification of silicone oil in the vitreal cavity were identified. the in vitro experiments conducted by different authors prove that such factors as the biological fluid inside the eye (blood, plasma, intraocular fluid), the severity of the inflammatory process inside the eye, tamponade term, age of patients, physical properties of silicone oil can be triggers in the development of emulsification.
