침묵과 부재: 장률 영화 속의 디아스포라

Abstract

장률 감독은 중국에서는 최초의 조선족 출신 감독이고, 한국에서는 최초의 중국 동포 감독이다. 스스로가 한 명의 디아스포라로서 중국과 한국 두 나라에서, 혹은 두 나라의 사이에서 활동하는 그의 영화 작업은 동아시아에 산재한 디아스포라적인 현상들을 디아스포라적인 시선으로 다룬다는 것으로 요약할 수 있다. 이 글은 <망종>, <경계>, <이리> 등 그가 만든 3개의 작품을 통해 그의 이야기와 스타일을 고찰해 보려는 시도이다. <망종>의 주인공은 중국 대도시 변두리에서 김치 장사를 하는 조선족 최순희이다. 그녀는 산업화로 인한 이산이라는 디아스포라의 보편성과 중국 내 조선족이라는 특수한 디아스포라 상황에 이중으로 속해 있다. <경계>는 몽골의 초원에서 나무를 심는 남자 항가이와 탈북한 모자가 만나서 맺는 관계에 대한 이야기이다. <이리>는 30년 전의 폭발로 사라진 도시 이리에서 부유하는 인물들을 다룬다. 디아스포라적인 시선을 구성하는 장률의 스타일의 첫 번째는 부동하는 공간으로서의 시간이다. 두 번째는 중심과 주변으로서의 외화면과 내화면의 전환이다. 세 번째는 언어의 부재이다. 그의 이런 모든 시도는 동아시아의 정체성에 대한 논의가 활발한 지금 영화 안에서 그것을 탐구하는 하나의 모법으로서 장률의 영화를 주목하게 한다. The first Chinese film maker from Korean ethnicity, Jang Ryul is also the first Korean director from Chinese background. As a diaspora himself, he crosses over two countries, trying to look through diaspora viewpoint at diaspora phenomena widely scattered in Northeast Asia. This paper is written in an effort to closely consider his story and style through 3 films, <Grain in ear>, <Desert Dream>, and <Iri>. The main character in <Grain in ear> is a Korean Chinese woman, Choi Sun Hee, who sells Kimchi in outskirt of a city. <Desert Dream> is the story about the relationship between Hangai, a Mongolian man who plants trees in deserted prairie and North Korean mother and son in defection from North Korea. <Iri> treats a group of characters floating around in Iri, the city that was vanished by the explosion 30 years ago. The first thing of the style of Jang Ryul building the diaspora viewpoint is time, crossing the floating space. The second one is the inversion of on-screen space and off-screen space or center and periphery. The third one is the absence of language. Given the fact that discourses about the identity of East Asia flourish these days, his movies, as the fruit of consistent attempt to search for East Asian identity within the filmmaking process, deserve more attentions.
