Abstract

Parapharyngeal space tumors are rare, and most of them are benign. We treated a patient with a malignant tumor of the parotid gland that developed in the parapharyngeal space and caused hardness of hearing.A 70-year-old-man complained of hardness of hearing in the left ear and tinnitus. One month later he had slight intermittent earache. A soybean sized tumor was found on the left side of his neck. A CT scan showed a left parapharyngeal space tumor. We performed subtotal parotidectomy and radical neck dissection after a cervical incision and lateral mandibulotomy.Histopathologic examination revealed adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland, so he was treated with external irradiation and chemotherapy (CAP). After 9 months the primary region was controlled with no evidence of metastasis or recurrence.
