Abstract

To solve the topical task of finding new dispatch modes for hydroelectric pumped storage power plants (HPSP) under introduction of electricity market and growth of wind farms and solar generation installed power in the Integrated Power System (IPS) of Ukraine, we proposed a new Integer Programming mathematical model, which is realized with MathProg language of GLPK linear programming package. The mathematical model takes into account the specific mode of operation of Ukrainian HPSP units, namely, practical impossibility to change power consumption and generation during operation of unit under pumping and generating modes, respectively. Calculations based on the proposed mathematical model are resulting in finding the optimal dispatch schedule of Ukrainian HPPS units for IPS (balancing) daily profile of electric loads with an hourly resolution. Results are evidence that the proposed model can be efficiently used to find new, non-ordinal dispatch plans of HPSP s units, for example, with simultaneous operation of some units under pumping mode, and other ones – under generating mode, allowingus to meet balancing security conditions for the IPS of Ukraine, e.g., under conditions of electricity and power generation growth from wind farms and solar stations. Our mathematical model can be used both for the formation of short-term forecasts of balancing daily profile of electric loads with optimal generation mix, and for long-term studies of generation powers mix optimal development that is critical under conditions of permanent rapid growth of wind and solar installed power. The proposed mathematical model also can be used as a basis for development of similar models for dispatching, e.g., thermal power plants and hydro plants with multiple units.
