Abstract
The article is devoted to the concept of «canon law» and consists of two parts. In the first one this concept is disclosed from the point of view of the legal norms incorporated in it, a general definition is given and its main characteristics are indicated. Due to the fact that the content of this concept has changed over time and differs in different faiths, the article gives a general outline of the formation of church norms from early Christianity to the current state of the Catholic and Orthodox branches of the Christian church. The second part of the article is aimed at the disclosure of this concept in terms of its content as an academic and scientific discipline, as well as basic interpretation strategies.
