Abstract

Workability, mechanical properties affected by cold-working and heat-treatment, and corrosion resistance were investigated for Mg-8 and 13mass%Li binary and ternary alloys containing additional elements of Al, Cu, Zn and Ag. The workability in cold-rolling was not markedly affected by the addition of third elements. The alloys containing aluminum or silver showed age-hardening. Mg-8 and 13mass%Li alloys containing 5mass% Al were hardened by the spinodal decomposition when the alloys were quenched from temperatures higher than 473K. The elongation of a Mg-8mass%Li-1mass%Ag alloy was 96.5%. Mg-8 and 13mass%Li ternary alloys showed low corrosion resistance compared with binary alloys.
