Abstract

The paper describes an effective control strategy for energy storage system (ESS) according to the severity of occurring in power system. ESS is generally used to mitigate the frequency oscillation against the power system disturbances. However, ESS can frequently operate even in situation where it is not necessary to operate due to small load change or small fluctuations in renewable energy. It can cause the frequency variations of the state of charge (SOC) of ESS and shorten the lifespan of the ESS. Therefore, the paper proposes effective control method to reduce the unnecessary operation of ESS by categorizing three control modes based on measured rate of change of frequency (ROCOF). The performance of the proposed method is verified through time domain simulation by applying it to the microgrid system.
