Abstract

A machinability test in dry cutting of AC3A castings to which effective modifiers Sr up to 0.36% and Sb up to 0.20% had been added was carried out using a high speed steel tool. Mechanical properties of the alloy are improved by Sr and Sb-modification. The modification using certain amounts of additives, 0.010%Sr and 0.20%Sb in this work, slightly prolongs the tool life. The overall machinability is improved, however, not so effectively as expected from the viewpoints of cutting resistance, chip condition and roughness of cut surfaces.
