Abstract

The article is devoted to the analysis of deproprial names of settlements with formants -ets’ and -ytsya. According to their structural-derivative features proper names of settlements are divided into onyms of preoykonymic level of derivation and onyms of oykonymic level of derivation. The first group includes oykonyms, structural formation of which took place till they became the names of settlements. These proper names are the result of onymization (Близниця < близниця, Митниця < митниця, Границя < границя, Криниця < криниця, Дільниця < дільниця) and transonymization (the source of creation is hydronymy: Бистрець < river Бистрець, Іржавець < river Іржавець, Апшиця < river Апшиця, Баговиця < river Баговиця, Стужиця < river Стужиця; the source of creation are the anthroponyms : Крикливець, П’ятниця). Transonymization is the productive way of oykonyms with formants -etsʹ, -ytsya creation, because these suffixes originally were typical names of rivers, streams, near which there were settlements. It was also found the names with formants -etsʹ, -ytsya that could be created from hydronyms but the same names of rivers were recorded in the other Ukrainian territory. For this reason a double (and sometimes triple) interpretation of the origin and ways of these oykonyms creation (Річиця, Водиця, Стариця) is suppoused. Key words: place name, formants -ець, -иця, transonimisation.
