Abstract

Ba-construction has always been a hot topic in the study of Mandarin Chinese grammar. But in the previous studies, scholars almost focused on the origin of Ba-construction or the Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing Dynasties Ba-construction research. For Modern Chinese, Ba-construction diachronic study using the corpus of literary works after the May 4th Movement is not enough. In order to understand the whole picture of the Ba-construction, this article will examine the historical development of the Ba-construction at this stage.
The selected corpus is the Modern Chinese representative work of two different periods. One is the novel Fortress Besieged created in 1944 to 1946 by Mr.Qian Zhongshu, the other one is the novel White Deer Plain created in 1988 to 1992 by Mr. Chen Zhongshi. On the one hand, the two works have high language research value, and the story background time is from the early twentieth Century to the middle of the period. On the other hand, although they belong to modern literary works, the creation time is more than 40 years apart. These conditions determine that these two works are suitable materials for diachronic comparative studies.
The structure of this paper is divided into 5 parts. The first part is the introduction, explains the research purpose, method and the selected corpus. The second part is the analysis of the Ba-construction usage in the novel Fortress Besieged. The third part is the analysis of the Ba-construction usage in the novel White Deer Plain. The fourth part is the comparative study of the Ba-construction in Fortress Besieged and White Deer Plain from a grammatical and semantic point of view. The fifth part is the conclusion.
