Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the educational value of modern civil movement that is kept by Dosan Ahn Chang-ho’s Heungsadan, Young Korean Academy) Movement. Heung Sa Dan, which was launched in 1913, has continued more than 100 years of history while finding a leader for the national sovereignty restoration movement and taking the lead in independence movement. First, the educational value of modern civil movement held by Heung Sa Dan pointed to patriotism as a democratic citizen with which the citizens participate in the politics of the country. Second, the gender equality was practiced with cooperating mutually and cultivating a sense of solidarity in the community. Third, the issue of citizenship in the era of globalization is also an important topic with having the thorough historical awareness. Fourth, there was a pursuit for the world peace that is required by multicultural society in the age of globalization. The modern Heung Sa Dan movement failed to gain a reputation such as Japanese colonial rule, but had influence upon the modern civil movement, and aimed for the just leadership and the lifelong education with following the spirit of Heung Sa Dan. Accordingly, the Heung Sa Dan movement achieved many educational values even in modern times and is advancing toward a righteous movement with setting up a vision for the future.
