Abstract

The article analyzes the phenomenon of the traditional Northern Russian vocal culture - Pinega lyrical song. The paper considers song variability techniques and degree of preservation of the key features of traditional Pinega solo singing by the example of records of Zinaida Grigoryevna Pashkova made by the author in village Karpogory of Pinega district of Arkhangelsk region in 2012. It is shown that the basic chants of Pinega “singing maidens” are clearly observed in Z. G. Pashkova’s singing. Scientific originality of the study lies in the fact that the author pays special attention to the performer’s versions that appear in the process of “spontaneous”/out-of-studio recording and introduces previously unpublished materials (scripts of audio recordings) into scientific circulation. The findings justify the necessity to work with archival materials, to continue recording the most talented folk singers, to conduct further studies of traditional Pinega lyrical singing.
