Abstract

This paper details an English reading class in which media content and literary works were integrated. This approach was expected not only to help students improve their English reading ability, but also to expand their world views and their insights into life. Results of an analysis of a student satisfaction survey were quite positive, indicating that the students became more interested in reading English through storytelling, and that this led to enhanced motivation to study English. The development of English competence is of course the top priority in any English class, but the time restrictions imposed on English classes in the liberal arts curriculum make it difficult for students to improve their spoken English during the academic semester. In conclusion, it is proposed that an integrated approach, including various media and works of literature, has the potential to be beneficial for the continued improvement of English skills and for the encouragement of wider perspectives.
