Abstract

The article deals with the phenomenon of advocacy journalism, its thematic and genre definition on the examples of Ukrainian and foreign mass media. In particular, media activity, dedicated to human rights’ defence, is considered in the context of socially responsible journalism. Its representation on the Ukrainian television channels «Inter» and «STB» in 2012-2014 is analyzed on the example of children’s issues, as well as in television programs of the BBC, documentary films and television projects of advocacy journalists U. R. Romano and S. Obeid-Chinoy. Ukrainian and foreign journalists, investigators and producers try to comprehend and reveal for mass audience the genesis of the problems of the poor, children and women, the spiritual health of humanity and outline ways out of crisis situations. The examined cases of advocacy media texts of Ukrainian and foreign production of the beginning of the 21st century allow us to state that international human rights journalism is a multi-vector, rather broad in raised issues, multifunctional meta-genre. Nowadays due to the broad problem-thematic coverage, humanistic pathos, advocacy journalists not only state the facts and inform the national or global public about incurable social diseases, but comprehensively consider their etiology and the current state, stimulate legislative, institutional and community activities to regulate and overcome the urgent problems of mankind, mobilize the society in finding ways to solve them. As for children’s issues, the following scenarios of its coverage are represented in Ukrainian, American and English television media practice: entertainment, investigative-analytical, documentary, and project-oriented. All of them are aimed not only on fixing the problem, but also on solving it. Undoubtedly, the media, advocative and social activities of the concidered and many other film-makers and journalists deserve further scholarly consideration and are highly valuable examples for development for collaborative journalism. Key words: representation, human rights issues, social responsibility, genre, TV program, documentary film, journalistic investigation .
