Abstract

The results of a comparative study present the anatomical and topographic features of the skull in a water deer as compared with other small ungulates of the Primorsky Krai. It was found that the morphological characteristics of the skull of a water deer were most clearly manifested in the area of the brain and the dentofacial apparatus. This is ex-plained by the peculiarities of the animal's lifestyle and the way of obtaining food. The established anatomical features in the structure of the skull bones of small ungulates of the Primorsky Krai will allow differentiating the species of the animal by the remains of the head, contributing to the qualitative conduct of forensic biological examinations, and will also assist hunting supervision specialists in establishing the hunting type of ungulates.
