Abstract

Nowadays it is important to determine how the surname bearers evaluate their surnames, whether they find them attractive, what aspects of surnames can cause negative emotions, and what the motives for changing the last name are. Using the questionnaire method we got important results: (1) majority of surname bearers have assessed positively their surnames; (2) the perception of the surname as a name of the family line that should be protected and preserved dominates; (3) prejudice to the surnames was connected with such factors as negative connotation of surnames (negative associations), formation of offensive informal names, diminutive form; (4) only one person out of 40 declared his wish to change the surname, although there were a few negative opinions.
