Abstract

This paper is an analysis of the articles and books published between 2018 and 2019. For the two years, Ming-Qing historians in Korea published 28 papers and three books on Chinese society in China proper, 32 papers and two books on foreign relations and border regions including the borders within China proper, and 35 papers and three books related to the relationship between Korea and China. Overall, existing researchers tended to deepen their research in their field. However, young researchers paid attention to the previously neglected research topics. In the past two years, three recent research trends have continued. First, the “New Qing history” has a strong influence. Many of the papers deal with the history of various ethnic minorities in the periphery, and researchers are using not only Chinese literature but also various historical sources left by minority ethnic groups in their own language. Second, papers in maritime history are increasing. For the past two years, maritime forces uncontrolled by Beijing in the Southeastern coast have become the most popular topic among maritime papers. Third, research on the history of Korea-China relations is solidifying its mainstream position in the study of Ming and Qing history. There are more papers on the history of Korea-China relations than any other research topics. Recent researchs on the history of Korea-China relations raise questions on the tribute system as the analytic framework of Ming and Qing China’s forigen relations, and attempt to approach the concrete reality of Korea-China diplomacy.
