Abstract

The culture of funeral monuments erection reflects the long process of developing the types and forms inherited from ancestors that are genetically related. The article examines different types and forms of funeral monuments erected by the ancestors of the Karachay-Balkar people. The paper provides a detailed characteristic of archaeological objects, proposes a classification of the most frequent types of funeral monuments in Karachay and Balkaria. The role of anthropomorphous steles in a syn-tash (funeral monument) formation is analysed through the lenses of evolution of the stone statue construction tradition. The authors show that stone statues served as a model for different types of funeral monuments.
