Abstract

Residents’ support in tourism development is critical to the success of sustainable tourism and requires intensive research efforts. This study examines the drivers behind support of residents in the context of nature-based tourism destination by enriching the relevant discourse with a comprehensive view that integrates rational and emotional perspectives. Based on social exchange theory and place attachment, a research model was proposed to capture the effects of economic rationality factors (perceived benefit and cost) and non-economic rationality factors (place identity). This model was tested using 364 data collected from residents of Jecheon City. The results confirmed that perceived benefit and cost have direct impacts on place identity and support for sustainable tourism development. Additionally, place identity indirectly mediates the effects of perceived benefit and cost on residents’ support. Theoretical and practical implications for tourism planning and development strategies of destinations were discussed
