『본초강목(本草綱目)』이 조선 후기 과도(果圖)에 끼친 영향

Abstract

This study introduced and examined the development of herbal medicine in the context of the emergence of foreign fruits as subjects of paintings in the late Joseon Dynasty. In East Asia, oriental or Chinese medicine was developed while forming a common body of medical knowledge. The circulation of the 17th-century oriental medicine books, Bencao Gangmu and Dongui Bogam throughout East Asia coincided with the spread of the related illustrations. The purpose of the illustrations in Bencao Gangmu was the visualization of knowledge, which differed from conventional paintings. It is possible that it as continued to influence the knowledge system and discourse in East Asia.BR The paintings of exotic fruits in the late Joseon Dynasty depicted fruits such as lychee, fingered citron, and loquat; it is believed that there the direct or indirect influence of Bencao Gangmu along with the direct influence of shih zhu zhai shu hua pu in these paintings. In addition, it is suggested that bananas were not depicted in these paintings despite being symbols of food for ancestral rites in East Asia along with lychee because bananas were rarely painted in the Bencao Gangmu.BR In addition, the illustrations of Bencao Gangmu seem to have influenced the increease of material of the paintings. Further, the single illustrations may have served as a basis for new combinations of paintings, facilitating the development of paintings of flowers and birds in East Asia after the 17th century.BR Thus far, paintings of fruits had been drawn for the purposes of sketching and holiness; they have been interpreted as objects of enlightenment by the Zen painters of the Southern Song Dynasty and as projections of Confucian concepts by painters of the Ming Dynasty. In this study, it is argued that a scientific attitude of observation and capturing of the surroundings has been incorporated in these paintings since the 17th century.
