Abstract

The paper deals with issues relating to implementation of distance teaching of music performance and presents ways of application of information technology to resolve these issues.Distance teaching was pioneered in the 19th century. However, it is only in 2020, because of the COVID-19 pandemic that it has become as important for the system of education as never before. Under quarantine restrictions, the education process can be maintained due to application of information technology. The paper considers the specific usage of the term «information technology» in music education.Implementation of distance learning creates a series of problems in all areas of education. However, in music education this entails additional specific issues caused by specific features of music performance activity. The professional training in music performance includes physical, psychological and intellectual development, as well as a great deal of self-managed individual work. One of the traditional specific features in music education is a highly individualised approach to every student. The paper classifies various forms of teaching music performance disciplines, describes advantages and drawbacks of each form, as well as offers criteria for selection of a certain form or of a combination of forms depending on the students’ age, progress made so far, etc. Separately, the paper describes obstacles in the implementation of teaching ensemble disciplines online and offers ways to mitigate them. Also, the paper considers the issues arising in the process of taking examinations in music performance disciplines online.A conclusion is made that application of information technology in music education has a number of advantages and drawbacks, and therefore, the traditional in-person and online training can co-exist and complement each other. In this respect, the implementation of information technology requires upgrading of music masters’ skills in this area and further detailed development of techniques, forms and tools of distance music teaching.
