Abstract

The paper deals with the development of etymological studies in the field of Albanian language, focusing on four selected etymological dictionaries of Albanian: Etymologisches Worterbuch der albanesischen Sprache by Gustav Meyer (1891), Studime etimologjike ne fushe te shqipes by Eqrem Cabej (1976), Albanische Etymologien by Bardhyl Demiraj (1997) and Albanian Etymological Dictionary by Vladimir Orel (1998). The contents, methodology and theoretical context of all four dictionaries are analyzed, both individually and in mutual comparison. The paper estimates the state of art of the diachronic linguistics of Albanian and Indo-European at the moment of publication of the aforementioned dictionaries, as well as their contribution to Albanian and Indo-European etymological studies. The dictionaries were analyzed chronologically, in an attempt to sketch out the development of etymological studies of the Albanian language during the 19th and the 20th centuries, i.e. during the century-and-a-half-long period encompassed by the paper, as illustrated by the four selected etymological dictionaries of the Albanian language.
