Abstract

This study focuses on the Medals (勳章, 記念章) of Emperor Gojong in the Korean (Daehan) Empire and Japanese occupation. This study analyzed photographs of Emperor Gojong wearing medals as well as historical records. The analysis concluded that the medals of Emperor Gojong can be divided into six kinds: the Order of Geumcheok [金尺大勳章] in the Korean Empire, the Order of Seosung [瑞星大勳章] in the Korean Empire, the Order of the Chrysanthemum [菊花大 綬章] in Japan, the Order of Leopold in Belgium, Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro in Italia, and Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur in France. The Korean Empire’s commemorative medals of Emperor Gojong have three kinds, consisting of a Commemorative medal for Gojong’s 50th Birthday, a commemorative medal for the Ruby Jubilee of the Emperor, and a commemorative medal for the wedding of the crown prince. Based on this analysis, the medals estimates the chronology for the photographs.
