Abstract

The theme of doubles in European literature is a most traditional one, interest in this artistic phenomenon culminated in the epochs of Romanticism and Modernism. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries doubling of a literary character appeared as a result of many-sided analysis of the phenomenon of split consciousness of the human personality. In contemporary Russian literature the traditional theme of doubles has gained new forms and new meanings. This is especially obvious in V. Makanin’s novels of the last decade of his writing: Испуг (Fright) [2006], Асан (Asan) [2008], Две сестры и Кандинский (Two Sisters and Kandinsky) [2011]. In V. Makanin’s prose fiction, doubles are the major means of depicting the tragically split, de-humanized world. The writer proceeds from the tradition of its romanticist and modernist interpretation but makes its range absolute. According to V. Makanin, contemporaneity is a universal indestructible theatre of doubles.KEY WORDS: Russian literature, V. Makanin, doubles, de-humanized world.
