Abstract

Objectives: This study was conducted to identify research trends and effect sizes of counseling for childhood social anxiety disorder. Methods: A systematic review was conducted by selecting 19 out of 7,169 articles on childhood social anxiety disorder in Korea applying the PICOTS framework. Results: First, the number of studies on the effectiveness of counseling for childhood social anxiety disorder has gradually increased since 2008, with the most published in the fields of psychology and counseling. Most studies were quasi-experimental designs, and the duration and frequency of counseling tended to be short, depending on the child's characteristics. Cognitive-behavioral approaches were the most common counseling intervention. Further, among studies with large effect sizes (Cohen's d), cognitive-behavioral therapy was the most common (50%), video feedback, gestalt, mindfulness, and self-compassion programs also had large effect sizes. Conclusions: This study concludes with suggestions for further research on counseling for childhood social anxiety disorder.
