Abstract

1) Of fish which feeds on organisms with chitinous shells, such as shrimps and most zooplanktons, the chitinolytic activties in the stomach were found to be high at the cardiac part and in the blind sac of the stomach but comparatively low at the pyrolic part. 2) The chitinolytic activty in the stomach of Konosirus punctatus, or Mugil cephalus, which feeds mainly on phytoplankton in sea water or detritus and microbenthos on bottom muds were low or negligible. 3) Of Pagrus major and Trachurus japonicus, the mastication and digetion of Metapenaeus joyneri and its course in the digestive tract was examined. The mastication and digestion of the foods in digestive tracts of these fishes are further discussed.
