Abstract
본고는 혐오와 공포, 매혹과 탕진의 이미지를 갖는 아편 중독의 의미를 바탕으로 일제 강점기 소설 속 지식인 중독자의 표상에 대해 분석하고 의미 매김 하고자 한다. 일제강점기 우리나라에서 아편은 식민지의 현실과 결부되는 정치적인 의미를 갖는다. 지식인의 아편 중독 문제는 몰락해가는 중산 계급의 한계로 그려지며, 30년대에 들어 사회주의 사상에 대한 비유로 등장한다. 주의와 아편의 비유는 파시즘의 현실 속 지식인에게 전향과 환멸의 서사를 나타내거나 중독과 전락의 서사를 가져온다. 30년대 후반 다양한 소설들은 히스테리로 윤리적 자아를 연출하는 지식청년의 서사를 보여준다. 중독자에 대한 지식인의 비판적 시선은 파시즘적 폭력에 대한 기대로 이어질 수 있다. 이에 비해 혐오스러운 동시에 숭고한 지식인-중독자의 서사는 파시즘의 현실에 대한 저항을 내포한다.
