Abstract
Scaglietti (1979) developed new treatment for simple bone cysts by the injection of Methylpredonisolone acetate into the cystic cavities. However, imcomplete healing or recurrence often ensued in spite of the prolonged treatment. So, we performed the implantation of hydroxyapatite porous cuboid ceramics (HAp) for the treatment of simple bone cysts in eleven patients (5-43 yearsold), at eight humerus and one femur etc. Fever or local inflamation was not oberved in either case. Although the postoperative period is 5 to 22 months (avarage, 10), new bone formation was recognized by X-ray one to five months postoperatively, and almost complete healing ensued in all cases.HAp is a safe and bioactive ceramics which induces new bone formation. Although the implantation of various ceramics with autogenous bone is reported for the treament of benign bone tumors, the implantation only by HAp is probably the more simple and less invasive procedure promising complete cure of the simple bone cysts.
