Abstract

This collective monograph deals with the status of the artificial body in world culture, both artistic and intellectual, across different geographical areas from antiquity to the present day. The authors study the motifs and plots associated with the images of animated statues and dolls, robots, automata, androids and cyborgs, interpreting the psychological, ontological, aesthetic and ethical aspects of this topos both in the arts (literature, painting, sculpture, cinema) and in the scientific discourse. The collective monograph is designed for philologists, historians of art and culture, as well as for a wide readership.
