Abstract

The article considers peculiar features of the Chancellor of Germany’s political speeches. The main tactics used by the head of the German government are determined, including the tactics of identifying the politician with the people, the tactics of emotional pressure, contrasting, appealing to the authority, and the tactics of referring to one’s own experience. The strategies of the political discourse are characterized. The argumentation strategies in political communication are covered. It was proved that the social role of political discourse lies in persuading the citizens of the necessity to make correct decisions or evaluations. In other words, the objective of political discourse is to encourage the elector to take action. Politicians provide arguments and facts, resort to various influence techniques. The article analyses the argumentation and lexical and stylistic peculiarities of Angela Merkel’s political speeches. The research shows that the argumentation in the public speeches of the Chancellor of Germany is expressed through logical facts and emotional arguments. The article provides examples of metaphoric phrases, phraseological units, and various patterns as important elements of Angela Merkel’s political speeches.
