Abstract

Purpose: to analyze the problems of functioning of the Sarpinskaya watering and irrigation system canals, to determine the main reasons for decreasing water supply for land watering and irrigation based on data from the technical and operational maps of the Sarpinskaya watering and irrigation system (for 2013–2020) and literature data. Discussion. It has been determined that the Sarpinskaya watering and irrigation system does not work in the design mode. In 2020 and 2021 67.87 and 58.8 % of land remained unwatered, respectively (of the total actual land area serviced by the system). The reasons for this are the lack of irrigation equipment, water shortage, lack of financial resources from agricultural producers to pay for electricity, as well as defects in the condition of canals, expressed in the deterioration of their carrying capacity as a result of silting and overgrowing of canals with shrubs and reeds. Significant water losses for filtration, reaching 37 % of the total actual volume of water intake, also determine the low value of the efficiency factor of the system, which is 0.64. Conclusions. The implementation of anti-filtration measures, which were not taken into account when designing the Sarpinskaya watering and irrigation system will allow using the saved water resources for introducing new lands into agriculture. The reconstruction of the Р-1 canal, planned for implementation until 2026, will partially solve the problem of water supply for irrigation, however, the technical re-equipment of the system with modern pumping units, water recording and water distribution facilities is also a necessary condition for the proper functioning of the Sarpinskaya watering and irrigation system, as well as the restoration of the designed hydraulic parameters of its water courses.
