Abstract
Assuming that party-based Euroscepticism could expand to citizens’ Euroscepticism and bring about changes in party system in European countries, this study seeks to understand the characteristic of Eurosceptic parties and to explore the motivations leading these parties to adopt Eurosceptic positions. In particular, it tests whether their Eurosceptic positions are driven by differentiation-strategy motivation or by ideology based motivation. Analysing parties from 17 Western European member states and 11 Central and Eastern European member states, this study demonstrates clearly that parties’ Euroscepticism is driven first and foremost by the ideology based on nationalism or populism. This finding implies that party-based Euroscepticism could affect not only sustainability of European integration but also party system in Europe.
