Abstract

Through the press reports about East-Berlin Incident, we can examine social atmosphere of South Korea and West Germany, and define the role of the press in South Korea and West Germany at that time. South Korean press just followed the opinion of KCIA and the prosecution, and they kept the tone of anti-communism. But West German press brought up critics about the handling of West German government continuously, and they brought up questions about the fact of the incident, such as whether the suspects were really spies of North Korea or not. The reason of the difference of the tone of South Korean and West German press was the difference of the awareness about anti-communism. Park Chunghee regime prevented all discussions about the unification of Korean peninsula and any type of the contacts to North Korean people. But between West and East Germany, there was no war, and human contact continued even after the construction of the Berlin Wall. So West German press could focus on the human rights and the truth, although anti -communism was still remained undiminished.
