Abstract

The article examines the main stages of the historical geography as a special discipline, the formation of the historical and geographical trends of its development, the evolution of views on the subject and structure of historical and geographical studies. For this analysis the basic concepts of Western and Russian scholars of the 18–20th centuries (Karl Ritter, Alfred Hettner, Alexander von Humboldt, Vasily Tatishchev, Leonid Majkov) who contributed to develop a methodology for historical and geographical research. A special emphasis is placed on the development of historical geography in the Ukrainian lands associated with the names of Stepan Rudnytskyi and Volodymyr Kubiyovych.
