Abstract

The article traces the literary connections between Shakespeare and Pushkin. Shakespeare's Comedy “Measure for measure” and Pushkin's poem “Angelo” are considered. The Comedy “Measure for Мeasure” refers to the “tragic” period of the English playwright's work and reflects the socio-religious and spiritual and moral changes in the consciousness of that era. It is this turning point that opens a new stage in the history of Western European literature. As a humanist, Shakespeare puts man in the center of attention in his contradictions, appearing in greatness and sinfulness. The problem of a heroic person who can fight evil becomes less relevant. The moral qualities of powerful rulers are brought to the fore. Pushkin became the successor of Shakespeare's traditions in Russian literature. Considering Shakespeare as his “father” and teacher, Pushkin develops the problem of personality in power posed by the English playwright. Pushkin was attracted to Shakespeare's play not only by its humanistic orientation, but also by its religious aspect. The article actualizes the idea that unlike Shakespeare, who also defends the law, Pushkin, from the Orthodox point of view, puts Christian charity and love above legal norms.
