Abstract

The Master Thesis on Tourism in Greece, Case Study: Establishment of a dialysis unit in a public health center, is prepared in the framework of the final dissertation for the Master's Degree in Economics of the University of Piraeus. Aim: The main purpose of this work is to investigate the possibility of developing Medical Tourism in our country, through the creation of a dialysis unit. Methodology: In order to fulfill the purpose of the work, a case study was conducted. Specifically, the collection of bibliographic data was carried out from bibliographic sources, as well as through foreign language articles, related to the development of Medical Tourism. An dialysis unit was selected for the case study, due to the availability of several data and due to the high importance of the disease (dialysis). Results: According to the main results, the development of medical tourism in Greece is a new market for both the medical and tourism sectors. The potential of medical tourism is increasing due to social, political, economic and demographic changes in other countries. Regarding the case study, the net result of the dialysis unit is not expected to increase significantly, which is almost expected, given that the majority of revenues are from state resources and are calculated to cover operating costs, however Greece will gain a share. Slowly and steadily, and in addition access to health services is possible, especially in patients on whom dialysis is not an option.
