Abstract

The artificial femoral head in total hip arthroplasty (THA) is considered as one of the key parameters of THA design. This study evaluates mechanical stability and range of motion (ROM) of hip prosthesis with different femoral head sizes using a 3D finite element analysis (FEA) system after reconstructing femoral heads directly from medical images. Three femoral head models were constructed with the developed module to evaluate the performance of hip implants according to different ball heads. The results showed that an increase in femoral head size decreased the peaked von-Mises stress (PVMS) in the head and increased the PVMS in the patient’s femur. In addition, an increase in head size reduce the risk of dislocation due to the improvement of ROM. This work basically recommends implanting large-diameter heads during THA, but the exact head size should be determined by considering both the PVMS on the femur and the ROM.
