Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explain the mechanism of the occurrence and constraints of phonological phenomena in Sino-Korean words by analyzing information which is involved in the occurrence and constraints. BR The structure information which is involved in the occurrence of the phonological phenomena in Sino-Korean words was described from the viewpoint of a morphological structure analysis of Korean grammar. However, this structure information had the problem of not being able to provide consistent information on the occurrence of the phonological phenomena in Sino-Korean words. So, this study tried to analyze the structure information of Sino-Korean words that speakers recognize based on the occurrence patterns of the phonological phenomena and explain the mechanism of the occurrence of the phonological phenomena on the basis of it. For ‘n-r (ㄴㄹ)’ sequence used in Sino-Korean words, constrains occur because of an articulatory cause, but the method that the constraints are eliminated is subject to the structure information of Sino-Korean words, not the phonetic information. Lateralization is chosen under the condition that the structure of Sino-Korean words with ‘n-r(ㄴㄹ)’ sequence is recognized as simple words by them or speakers.BRThe change from ‘r(ㄹ)’ to ‘n(ㄴ)’ is chosen under the condition that the structure of Sino-Korean words is recognized as the components are analyzed by complex words or speakers. And the glottalization of coronal obstruent is applied under the condition that the structure of Sino-Korean words with sequence of liquid and coronal obstruent is recognized as simple words. BR There are the cases of constraints in the occurrence because phonological phenomena are causative of Sino-Korean words. The mechanism of constraints over Sino-Korean words in phonological phenomena has not been discussed enough until now. The Sino-Korean words have the status of Korean grammar units, but there are cases that specific phonological phenomena could not be applied to. Phonological phenomena could not be applied to Sino-Korean words not because they avoid applying the applicable phonological phenomena but because they are not closely related to neighboring elements morphologically and syntactically. The glottalization of nouns in Sino-Korean words is not applied behind ‘-eul’, an adnominal clausal ending. It is because the glottalization was adopted in order to represent intimacy between adnominal forms and following nouns in the noun phrase composition. If the Sino-Korean words work as the following elements in the composition, there cannot be close relationships between preceding and adnominal forms. And the purpose of `n(ㄴ)`-insertion is to keep free morpheme of following elements within the composition of grammar. But `n(ㄴ)`-insertion does not occur in the Sino-Korean words that follows words that have a vowel ‘i’. The `n(ㄴ)`-insertion is not applied because the Sino-Korean words avoid the `n(ㄴ)`-insertion but because there is not a close relationship between precedent elements and them when the Sino-Korean words with the vowel ‘i’ work as the following elements.
