Abstract

We operated on eight patients with degenerative lumbar disease. Mean age at operation was fifty-six (49 to 71) years old and mean follow-up was ten months (6 to 16). Several types of instrumentation were applied to all of them. Indications for instrumentation were vertebral slip, loss of lumbar lordosis or lumbar kyphosis, degenerative lumbar scoliosis with slip, and instability after surgical decompression. Posterior approach was employed in seven and anterior approach in another one. Transpedicular fixation by Zielke rods was used in five patients, combined method by Harrington large compression rod and Luque rod in two and Luque instrumentation in one and others were performed. All gained solid fusion by posterolateral and facet fusion in posterior approach. Clinical results were good in relief of pain and increasing daily activity. Neural damages occurred in two patients. In cases with mild degenerative olisthesis, transpedicular method with rods seemed to be useful. But in moderate cases Steffee plates seemed to be useful in correcting the deformity and maintaining the correction.
