Abstract

In the time of technological progress and development, the modern civilization again and again turns to the primary grounds of world perception. Mythologems of natural elements of fire, water, air and earth are mentioned or analyzed in the great amount of ethnographic studies. In the music studies the artistic embodiment of mythologems, especially those that are based on perception and interpretation of nature elements, has not received a special consideration yet. The purpose of this study is to analyze the mythologems of nature elements in the musical embodiments of the drama extravaganza “The Forest Song” by Lesya Ukrainka, based on the example of the ballet by Mykhailo Skorulskyi and opera by Vitaliy Kyreyko. The mythologems of all nature elements are reflected in the drama extravaganza “The Forest Song” by Lesya Ukrainka and its musical embodiments (that are studied in this article based on the ballet by Mykhailo Skorulskyi and opera by Vitaliy Kyreyko). The Water element in the forest is interpreted as a symbol of eternal nature of Polissia – showing a quiet forest lake, formed by the forest stream. The Water mythologem is represented by the actions of such characters as spring stormy, spring streams – children, Water Mermaid and other mermaids and a Merman. They are accompanied by Poterchata – who are just lights, but swamp lights that live in the aquatic environment and lure people in it. In general, the Water element, in musical interpretations is shown as a binary system – as well as wonderful lakes of Polissia and rushing spring water streams, which carry a new life, and as the deceptive and dangerous mermaids and poterchata in the swamps. It displays the essential difference in the interpretation of the Water mythologem in ethno-linguistic sense – as pure and living (lakes, streams), as well as dirty, muddy and dead (swamps). The elements of fire and wind are combined in one character of fiery wind – Perelesnyk. It also becomes a symbol of Mavka’s freedom and her rebirth for a new life. Finally, the mythologem of Earth and everything that grows on it is represented by the forest and field creatures. The natural synthesis of all elements is personified in the image of Mavka – a forest beauty, related to Earth trees and flowers and to a willow-tree, which symbolizes a connection with Water and mermaids – Water creatures. The Fire of Love, through the music, gives Mavka the soul (“the spark fell in the heart”) and the fiery wind – Fire and Air, incinerates and revives her for the new life. The immortal culture artifact of “The Forest Song” is the embodiment of the ancient conception of the essence of natural elements and the mythologem source. Keywords: mythologem, drama extravaganza, natural elements, musical embodiment, opera, ballet.
