Abstract

Hedging represents one of the most promising directions in the field of modern linguistic pragmatics. Describing a brief history of the linguistic phenomenon, which came from the economic sphere, we analyse different interpretations of the essence of this strategy. The use of hedging strategy is widespread in various types of discourse, especially in political discourse. The purpose of our work is to consider the use of hedging strategy in political discourse, singling it out as one of the most unique areas of research because of the peculiarities of political speeches, which differ significantly from other forms of communication. One of our objectives is to explain the features of the hedges functioning in this type of texts. We analyse examples of politicians’ utterances where hedges playing the role of a mitigating element are found. In this paper we will describe their role in context
