Abstract

This paper reports on a study on compounding in Modern Greek (MG) as Second Language (L2). Twenty eight (28) adult students of MG as a foreign language were asked to form eighty two (82) compounds of different categories (nouns, adjectives, verbal compounds). The students knew only the compound constituents and the meaning of the compounds they had to form. The errors made included wrong choice of compound constituents, omission of the compounding vowel, intonation errors and errors concerning the head of compounds. On the basis of these errors, we describe strategies employed by L2 learners of MG to form compounds unfamiliar to them.
