Abstract
This study examines how the participation in cultural and artistic activities impacts on an individual’s life satisfaction and psychological wellbeing. And these impacts of participation are verified based on the moderating effect of self-efficacy and openness. For this, the questionnaires were distributed to 240 people who were either the participants of the Ulsan Whale Festival or the students of the Cultural Center. And among them, 227 questionnaires (94.6%) were used for the study. The first purpose of the study is to identify how both indirect and direct participation in cultural and artistic activities correlate with the degree of the individual’s life satisfaction. The second purpose was on the correlation between the participation in cultural and artistic activities and the individual’s sense of psychological wellbeing. And lastly, the study was to know how the self-efficacy and openness moderate in these two kinds of correlation. The results of the analyses are as follows. Firstly, it shows that the participation in cultural and artistic activities has a significant positive influence on the life satisfaction. And, it is also measured to have a positive influence on individual’s sense of psychological wellbeing. In the case of the moderating effect of self-efficacy, self-efficacy driven by cultural and artistic activities is significantly positively related to both the degree of life satisfaction and the sense of psychological wellbeing. And, in the case of the moderating effect of openness, openness in regards of the psychological wellbeing shows much more significance with activities through exhibitions, movies, musical instruments, dancing and so on. However, at the same time, openness in regards of the life satisfaction is not meaningfully related to both indirect and direct participation of activities. Based on the results, the study shows that both indirect and direct experiences of cultural and artistic activities, the degree of life satisfaction, the sense of psychological wellbeing, self-efficacy, and openness are all very useful variables to promote the level of participation in cultural and artistic activities.
