Abstract

Effect of circumstance pressure in mill on comminution of molybdenum sulfide (MoS2) used for hydro-desulfurization (HDS) catalyst was investigated. MoS2 was prepared in argon at a pressure between 0.7kPa and 0.2MPa using a media agitation mill with an addition of butanol. Comminuted MoS2 was characterized in crystal structure, specific surface area, pore size distribution and catalytic activity for HDS of dibenzothiophene (DBT). Maximal of specific surface area of MoS2 was obtained by comminution at a pressure of 30kPa. On the other hand, the destruction of layered structure of MoS2 and the volume of micro-pore having a width of 0.4-0.6nm increased with Ar pressure. MoS2 prepared at a high Ar pressure had a high catalytic activity for HDS of DBT. These results suggested that the catalytic activity was influenced by the destruction of layered structure and the generation of micro-pores by mechano-chemical activation.
