Abstract

The purpose of the study is to determine to what degree euphemisms participate in formation of semantic unity of a text. It is rather important to study euphemisms using examples from two languages, thus making it possible to determine how active they are in both of them. Newspaper articles in English and German from such outlets as “The Guardian”, “Die Welt”, “Spiegel online” were used as research material. Scientific novelty of the study lies in the fact that coherent functions of euphemisms are analysed for the first time, such functions of euphemisms as anaphoric and cataphoric are also studied. The attained results have shown that euphemisms are units that form semantic unity of a text and function in a publicistic text as anaphora and cataphora. The article is of interest for linguists, translators, teachers, as well as people learning a foreign language.
